The Corps of Discovery left Camp Dubois and headed for St. Charles.

May 20, 1804
They met up with William Clark. Their transport consisted of a 10 ton 55ft keel boat (Barge) and two dug out boats known as pirogues. Having met with Clark, the expedition continued westward along the Missouri River.

Lewis spent a lot of time ashore dealing with the scientific objectives of the expedition, while Clark concentrated on making maps and charting the course. Wherever possible, Lewis and Clark camped on river islands for security.
